Africa- A Continent Explored

‘Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to have traversed the African Continent by my 22nd birthday, crossing deserts, battling impenetrable jungles and experiencing the excitement (or was it fear?) of my first encounter with a male Lion’

North to South, West to East, Africa unfolded a magic that has yet to dwindle in all of us in the Explorer family and remains the driving force behind our company philosophy-we simply strive to unfold the same magic that inspired so many years ago.

Following are some of the areas we frequently create experiences in, including of course our ‘home’ country in Africa-Tanzania, but this selection is just a taste of where and how we like to design travel experiences for our guests, so if the area you wish to travel is not included, please contact us and we will be more than happy to discuss options.

East Africa

Kenya and Tanzania are perhaps the foundation blocks of any big game safari, with their history deep routed in early exploration and a list of inspired novels as lengthy as the continent itself.

Our own philosophy is that any safari should include time in authentic tented camps where the raw experience of being as close to the essence of predator and prey interaction can be felt, smelt and heard sometimes all at once!

Of course, variety is the spice of life, and combining a selection of unique boutique lodges and permanent tented camps provides an altogether unrivalled experience.

Both Tanzania and Kenya excel at providing magnificent game viewing experiences alongside stunning accommodations of every style to suit any budget.

Culturally, East Africa is one of diversity, with resplendent warriors and hunter gatherers co-existing in historical balance, each lending a flare of colour to the eco system. Meaningful interaction with any of the peoples we encounter on any journey with Explorer is of paramount importance.

This ever-expanding travel experience can also include Rwanda and Uganda with trekking for Chimpanzees and Mountain Gorillas, unfolding yet more of East Africa.

Southern Africa

Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia all provide unique experiences in their own right, or combined with South Africa collectively or individually for total immersion into the southern hemisphere game rich countries.

In contrast to the vast east African game parks, southern Africa specialises in traditionally smaller reserves where a lower density of tourism is experienced and with it a higher cost but no less excitement.

Small boutique lodges and camps overlook the Okavango wetlands and Makgadikgadi flats in Botswana, whilst Namibia contrasts with its Skeleton Coast where towering dunes meet the Atlantic Ocean and red ochred Himba tribeswoman live an existence on the edge of the Marienfluss valley bordering Angola. Zambia and Zimbabwe are game rich in their own right.

The mighty Victoria Falls bordering Zambia and Zimbabwe are an exquisite end or beginning to an exploration of the southern countries, with helicopter flights, bungie jumping for the brave or simply enjoying the Sound that Thunders from one of the iconic lodges overlooking this spectacle.

Northern Africa

Egypt

‘Egypt was the first African country I ever visited and as such still holds a special place in my heart. I still remember climbing into the heart of the Great Pyramid of Cheops, absolutely enthralled with the magnitude of the architecture and my insignificance within it’.

The mighty Sahara Desert, glistening River Nile, High Atlas Mountains and ancient civilisations all form the backbone of our North Africa Portfolio.

Egypt has its own stories with travellers who have visited-some are overwhelmed with the harshness of commerce and the lack of personal space but nine times out of ten that’s just bad planning.

There is an Egyptian experience to be had, with careful planning that can provide a truly unique experience. Private visits to the Pyramid complex, sound and vision productions and exclusive Nile yacht charters unfold an Egypt exploration second to none.

Morocco

The Gateway for commerce to and from southern Europe to Morocco and its neighbouring countries, Morocco has long standing trade connections spanning centuries.

Look back in history to a time when the great camel trains ventured for 52 days from Timbuctou to Marrakech crossing the Sahara sands and traversing the ‘route of the Kasbahs’ overnighting at caravanserai (an ancient guest house with room for camels).

Ancient Royal Cities, bustling bazars and palmeries stretching as far as the eye can see are what Morocco is famous for but look deeper into the country and find deserted mountain roads, gorges and valleys where few travellers ever venture, with days end rewarded by a unique lodge or hotel so far off the beaten track that words have no meaning.

The great sand seas of the Sahara end on the far reaches of the eastern border of Morocco adding a uniquely ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ flare to a journey through the Royal Kingdom.
